ViPS and WebMD, Units of Emdeon, Awarded Contract by The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

WebMD's Personal Health Record Will Support Feasibility Test

NEW YORK, July 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Emdeon Corporation's (Nasdaq: HLTH) subsidiaries ViPS and WebMD Health Corp. (Nasdaq: WBMD) today announced that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has awarded the companies a six-month contract to conduct a personal health record (PHR) feasibility test to determine how claims data can be used to populate a PHR. As part of the program, ViPS will export Medicare claims data for conditions, procedures and other clinical and demographic information into the secure WebMD PHR. WebMD will serve as a subcontractor on the project to ViPS, which currently maintains multiple comprehensive data management contracts for CMS.

"ViPS is pleased to be working with CMS on this feasibility test," said Arthur Lehrer, President, ViPS. "We look forward to partnering with WebMD to further support CMS as it works towards meeting the President's vision of electronic health records for all Americans within the next 10 years."

"Our work on this important CMS project reflects WebMD's commitment to providing consumers with personalized health information," said Wayne Gattinella, CEO, WebMD. "By providing a secure, easily accessible and up to date health record of a person's health history, WebMD can help people better manage their health, while improving care and health outcomes."

During the analysis, the content and functionality of PHRs will be evaluated to determine how best to transform CMS claims data into a PHR that provides value to both consumers and care providers. In addition, recommendations will be developed about best practices for security and privacy issues, as well as ease of use, authorizations for disclosures, authentication, reporting and other beneficiary services related to the PHR.

Cahaba Government Benefit Administrators®, LLC will provide Medicare Data that will be used for the feasibility test. Cahaba's experience as a Medicare Part A and Part B claims processing contractor, and as a CWF Host Site, will ensure that the data defined in the feasibility test are viable in the existing Medicare environment.
