SAN FRANCISCO, Mar 18, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
LookSmart (Nasdaq: LOOK, ASX: LOK), a global leader in search, today announced that Zeal's community of volunteers has now contributed more than 250,000 high quality, non-commercial listings to its Web directory.
Since LookSmart's acquisition of Zeal in October 2000, community members from around the world have contributed to the directory in a variety of ways, including submitting high quality non-commercial sites, suggesting edits, and updating listings and categories. Content from Zeal is blended with LookSmart's editorially-reviewed listings and served as search results across a network of portal, search engine and ISP partners including Microsoft's MSN, About.com, Netscape, AltaVista, InfoSpace and Time Warner Cable's Road Runner.
"This dedicated volunteer community is helping us build the highest quality Web directories," said Kate Wingerson, vice president, editor in chief for LookSmart. "Zeal contributors enrich the directory with unique content that reflects their diverse locality, expertise and passions. This in turn enables LookSmart to deliver a higher level of relevance to search users."
Zeal communities operate in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. More than 200,000 subject categories are now open to community contributions across the four English-language Zeal directories. In the first two months of 2003 alone, Zealots have created more than 8,000 new content categories, ranging from Oregon Community Colleges and European Ice Hockey Teams to a category devoted to the February 19, 2003 plane crash in Zahedan, Iran.
