Organizations We Support

The Foundation has made cash grants totaling more than one million dollars since its inception. The giving decisions are made by employee committees in Bellevue and New Jersey, and by the directors of the Foundation. Gifts have been made to the following worthy causes, among others, in accordance with the Foundation's guidelines:

Emergency Feeding Program of Seattle/King County  www.emergencyfeeding.org
provides an emergency response to the nutritional needs of people in crisis hunger situations throughout Seattle and King County. EFP is dedicated to alleviating hunger while providing individuals with resource counseling to help move them towards independence. The goal is to provide a proactive, non-traditional approach to food assistance that will eventually lead to self-reliance for individuals in need of services.

For more than three decades, Solid Ground — formerly the Fremont Public Association — has helped our most vulnerable community members overcome economic crises and develop the skills and resources they need to thrive. 30 programs throughout King County have helped hundreds of thousands of people break the cycle of poverty since 1974.

ArtsFund  www.artsfund.org
ArtsFund's mission is to strengthen the arts in the region by advocating for all the arts. The arts inspire, contribute economically to, and educate our community. ArtsFund makes it easy to give to the arts by supporting roughly 70 local organizations using a rigorous grant allocation process, holding groups accountable to high standards, and providing general operating support. Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Western Washington - A support organization focused on and dedicated to working with families and children undergoing cancer treatment.

Safe Crossings  www.safecrossingsfoundation.org
The Safe Crossings Program is a successful grief support and education program for children in King County, created in collaboration with Providence Hospital of Seattle. The organization offers both one-on-one and support group style emotional support to children and their families both before and after the death of a loved one. All Safe Crossings services are free of charge.

Friends of Youth's mission is to provide a broad array of services to youth and their families to improve their emotional stability and self-sufficiency. Friends of Youth accomplishes this through four programs: Residential Services, Homeless Services, Youth and Family Services and Youth Development and Employment.

The Caroline Kline Galland Home  www.klinegalland.org
The Kline Galland Home promotes the highest quality of life by providing a continuum of exceptional care and services for the elderly in a Jewish environment. Kline Galland provides nursing care, assisted and transitional housing, nutrition and meal programs and respite and hospice services.

Fare Start  www.farestart.org
Fare Start "provides a community that transforms lives by empowering homeless and disadvantaged men, women, youth and families to achieve self-sufficiency through life skills, job training and employment in the food service industry." Employment training is complemented by life skills training and social services that allow students to effectively address the issues that contributed to their homelessness.

Wellspring Family Services of King County  www.family-services.org
The goals of this organization's Homeless Children's Services are to stabilize the lives of the children and strengthen their parents' ability to care for them by providing families with the resources they need. These services are provided through two programs - Morningsong, specialized child care center for homeless children, and the Baby Boutique, a unique store where homeless families with young children "shop" for free diapers, clothing, car seats and other basic needs for their infants and children.

West Seattle Food Bank  www.westseattlefoodbank.org
Hunger is a critical issue in West Seattle for the working poor, single parents, fixed-income seniors and children. Opened in 1981, the West Seattle Food Bank serves over 500 families each week.

Pike Market Senior Center  www.figgypudding.org
The Pike Market Senior Center and Downtown Food Bank have been assisting low-income and homeless individuals for more than 25 years. Their homeless prevention and intervention programs work to ensure that seniors and the general population have basic needs assistance as well as a way off of the streets. Through coordinated support services the Center helps people find jobs, housing, nutritious food, access to community services, and a warm welcoming center to help build self-sufficiency, providing a healthy environment that helps those in transition.

Senior Services is the largest non-profit agency serving older people in Washington. Established in 1967, the agency serves over 50,000 seniors and their families each year through an integrated system of quality programs and services.

Youth Eastside Services  www.youtheastsideservices.org
A lifeline for young people coping with abuse, violence, mental health challenges, drug and alcohol addiction, and family conflicts.

Ryther Child Center  www.ryther.org
Providing a safe, therapeutic, home-like environment to children who have been victims of physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and chemical dependency has been the Ryther Child Center's mission for over 65 years.

Eastside Domestic Violence Program  www.edvp.org
Since 1982, Eastside Domestic Violence Program has provided shelter, support and safety to more than 61,000 battered women and their children. This is north and east King County's only domestic violence program, and its mission is to end abuse by: (1) Changing individual, societal and institutional attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate violence and oppression, (2) Preventing domestic violence through education, advocacy and support, and (3) Providing services to anyone who has been abused, primarily women and children.

Senior Safety
provides installation of smoke detectors, grab rails, wheelchair ramps, etc. to low income seniors and disabled folks, free of charge. It is run on a shoe-string by a great guy named Dave Payea who saw the need for this service and started the organization with his own money.

Washington Women in Need  www.wawomeninneed.org
Funds low income women in the community who need help with medical insurance, dental care, mental health counseling or books and tuition.

Boomtown Cafe
A wonderful non-profit restaurant in Seattle that fed low income and homeless individuals and their families. Believing that soup lines offer an inadequate response to hunger and poverty, the café's mission was to create opportunities for low income and homeless individuals to access healthful, affordable food in a safe and dignified atmosphere, while promoting a community of openness and respect.

AIDS Coalition of NJ
The AIDS Coalition of Southern New Jersey provides direct services (food bank, case management, housing and legal services) to clients with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

PetPALS
Provides services to the animal companions of people living with terminal, chronic debilitating illness, or financially needy senior citizens.

Abilities Center of Southern NJ
Helps develop employment opportunities for persons with barriers to entering or re-entering the workforce. This is achieved through education, training, employment, and a commitment to quality customer service. American Red Cross, In the wake of the September 11 tragedy, our employees wanted to help in any way they could. Many donated blood and funds. The Foundation matched all employee cash donations on a 3 for 1 basis. The total gift to the ARC was nearly $55,000.

Gilda's Club  www.gildasclubseattle.org
Gilda's Club opened its red door in Seattle to the delight of the medical community and individuals affected by cancer. The cancer-support organization offers services six days a week, morning to night. Finally, there is a place for cancer patients and their families to catch their breath before resuming the fight of their lives.

In a thank you note, Gilda's Club Executive Director said "Everyone is buzzing about what drugstore.com did and how you did it. It was so uplifting for everyone... I hope you realize that drugstore.com by giving us that wonderful money was way ahead of the curve in understanding and realizing what Gilda's Club will mean to this community. Thanks for being so enlightened."

VISCOP
VISCOP (Visually impaired co-partners of Gloucester County, NJ) teaches the visually impaired to be self sufficient and give them dignity and social exposure. The center is open to persons of all ages. The organization sent it's thanks and said "We were floored over drugstore.com's generosity. Please convey our sincere gratitude to everyone involved."

Domestic Abused Women's Network (DAWN)
Domestic Abused Women's Network (DAWN) serves victims of domestic violence in South King County. DAWN's services assist women in the enormous task of overcoming obstacles and building entirely new lives for themselves and their families in the aftermath of domestic violence. In a thank you letter, the DAWN staff said "WOW - was there ever a celebration when we got the news. We're ecstatic! Thank you all so much for this extraordinary donation."

First Place School
First Place School devoted to helping children and families who are homeless or in transition in King County. Provides quality education (K-6) in safe and therapeutic classrooms with extended hours, counseling and case management, and basic services such as nutritious meals, school supplies, transportation, health screenings and referrals. Thanks from First Place - "Thank you! This generous gift means so much to First Place especially as we gear up for the new school year and are now able to serve even more homeless children and families with our new facilities and increased space...Your continuing commitment to First Place strengthens our resolve and deepens our respect for the community we live in. Thank you for joining in our efforts to serve Seattle's children and families."

Emmanuel Cancer Foundation
The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation helps preserve the quality of life for any New Jersey family whose child has been diagnosed with cancer. They provide direct, one-on-one services to families that have a child with cancer. Services are provided without charge. Some of the services provide include groceries, at home counseling to all family members, appliance repair or replacement, gifts for the child & siblings, funding for bills and the like.
