Philadelphia, Pa. (July 30, 2002) – CDI Corp. (NYSE: CDI) has signed a contract with Airbus to design the landing gear bay for the new Airbus A380, making CDI the first U.S. company to participate in the design of an aircraft for the European manufacturer.
The multi-year, multi-million dollar agreement makes CDI, a Philadelphia-based leading engineering outsourcing supplier, a first-tier supplier to Airbus, headquartered in Toulouse, France. When completed, the Airbus A380 will be the largest passenger airliner ever manufactured.
“CDI is helping Airbus take outsourcing to a new level with the A380,” said Roger H. Ballou, president and chief executive officer of CDI. “We’ll draw on the skill and experience of our engineers in the United States, Canada and Europe to ensure that Airbus has the best talent in the world involved in the design of its groundbreaking new airliner.”
“Airbus is committed to innovation, not only in pioneering new technologies, but in how we source and utilize talent,” said Yvan Le Naour, head of engineering procurement for Airbus. “Our relationship with CDI gives us access to a greater pool of engineering talent.”
Virtually a “Hotel in the Sky,” the A380 will be the world’s first four-level plane, accommodating as many as 555 passengers in comfort. It will be large enough to feature an entire level for sleeper cabins, crew rest areas, a business center and even a nursery. The aircraft will make its first flight in 2004, followed by entry into commercial service in 2006.
CDI’s work for Airbus is scheduled for completion in 2008 and at its peak will involve 30 CDI engineers in Canada, the United States and Europe.
“This is an excellent example of how CDI teamwork, value and client-focus can achieve positive results,” said Ballou. “Securing the Airbus contract took a lot of tenacity and hard work across a number of CDI offices. Everybody pitched in to meet the needs of the customer. I congratulate everyone involved in this project and know we will do a great job for Airbus.”
