This section of our website is Baker Hughes' new home for sustainability reporting. Baker Hughes is committed to reporting on its sustainability activities using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) as a guide. In the coming weeks we will publish information on our past activities as well as specific areas of improvement we are focusing on in 2008.

Sustainability Defined

The Brundtland Commission defined sustainable development as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." At Baker Hughes our sustainability focus includes our Health, Safety and Environment program; our Technology development; our focus on People; and our Compliance programs.

Health Safety and Environment

Our Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) programs focus on the health and safety of our employees and the health and safety of the communities we operate in. It includes our efforts to make sure that Baker Hughes is a good steward on the environment.

Technology

We are leaders in oilfield service technology. Our technology and services are used around the world by our oil and gas company customers to minimize the environmental cost of developing oil and natural gas reserves. For example extended reach directional drilling technology allows oil and gas fields under environmentally sensitive areas to be developed without disturbing the local ecosystem.

People

Baker Hughes operates in more than 90 countries around the world and employs more than 35,000 people, more than half of which work outside the United States. We are committed to local employment and the promotion of engineering and technical education to help assure that we have access to technically skilled employees we need to build the diverse multi-national workforce we need to service our customers in the future.

Compliance

We do business in over 90 countries around the world including half of the 30 countries with the lowest scores, which indicates high levels of corruption, in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index. Our Best-in-Class global ethics and compliance program is known within the company as Completely Compliant or C². C² ("c-squared") is our global commitment to fully comply with our Core Values, Code of Conduct, Financial and HSE standards, and applicable laws.
